Doctor why do we have cramps after giving birth?
The process of labour is very stressful to the body. Even though the woman may be lying in one place, a lot of muscles are contracting in her body. There is also increased heart rate.
A lot of hormones are secreted in the body which cause an increased metabolic rate. Along with this, she is possibly also not taking enough food and fluids. Increased sweating causes loss of salt from the body.
All these factors can combine to cause imbalance in water and electrolytes in the body. These are the reasons why many women have cramps after giving birth.
The cramps will subside over time when the woman starts to consume food and water. In hospital deliveries, the cramps are usually reduced in intensity because IV fluids are invariably infused, which provide water, glucose and salts during the process of delivery.
