Woman arrested after racist remarks about boy, 5, who fell from window

Police have confirmed a woman has been arrested after posting “disgusting” and “racist” comments online following the tragic death of a five-year-old refugee.

Mohammed Monib Majeedi fell around 70ft to his death from the OYO Metropolitan Hotel in Sheffield on Wednesday, landing on the car park roof below.

The Afghan’s death sparked an outpouring of grief as it emerged his mother Shekiba witnessed the fall and shouted “my boy” and “save my son please”.

The window – which should only open about 5cm – appears to have opened wide enough for Mohammed to fall through.

The youngster had only just arrived in Britain with his mother and father.

It is believed they were in quarantine for two weeks in Manchester before arriving in the South Yorkshire city four days ago.

His dad, Omar Majeedi, had been working for the British Embassy in Kabul as a senior humanitarian worker.

The hotel is temporary home to around 11 Afghan families, who had helped the British Army and Government.

The tragedy happened around 2.30pm on Wednesday when the boy’s dad was at work.

One hotel guest, who did not wish to be named, said the parents had several children: “I heard a big loud noise and then a couple of seconds later I heard the mother screaming, ‘my boy!’”

Afghan interpreter Jawed Jamal Akhtar, 35, who is also staying in the hotel with his wife and six children, said: “Mohammed was looking down through the window.

“He was leaning out of the window and he has fallen through.

“I went with his mother to hospital, but you could see Mohammed was dead.

“Omar came to the hospital, he was crying. The last time I saw the mother she was not good.”

Jawed added: “After the boy fell his mother was shouting ‘save my son please’ .

“Just the day before Mohammed was playing with my children at the front of the hotel, they were playing cops and robbers.”

Jawed said he has checked the windows in his room and they all only open 5cm.

“Last night my children would not go to bed, they were really scared.”

South Yorkshire Police have said there are no suspicious circumstances.

Health and Safety Inspectors could be seen opening a number of the hotel windows following Wednesday afternoon’s tragedy on Blonk Street.

Now South Yorkshire Police say they have detained a woman after her vile online comments were swiftly reported, YorkshireLive report.

The woman, who has not been named, was arrested by on Friday morning on suspicion of “malicious communications and racially aggravated public order offences”.

Police did confirm she was being held in connection with comments that were posted beneath a news story regarding the heartbreaking death of the child.

The little boy, who is understood to have arrived in Sheffield last weekend with his family after fleeing the Taliban, fell after leaning out of the window.

Acting Detective, Inspector Lee Corker said: “I would like to remind people that comments made online can have serious consequences.

“Hate speech or hate crimes will not be tolerated in person or online, and will be dealt with robustly by officers.

“Our social media channels are monitored, and whilst we encourage discussion, offensive comments may be investigated. Please consider the impact your words may have before you post.”

Sickened social media users celebrated the arrest, calling the woman “disgusting” and “racist” for her rant.

Earlier Sheffield City Council confirmed it was supporting the Home Office’s Relocation Scheme for those who have supported UK troops in Afghanistan and now find their lives at risk.

“Sheffield is a City of Sanctuary,” they said.

“We are seeing terrible scenes in Afghanistan and as a city we will not simply stand by when people are in crisis.”
