DO YABATECH STUDENTS REALLY HAVE A SAY ON CAMPUS
If we fight, we may win. But if we fail to fight, we have lost already. That is why silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly.
I’m writing this epistle not to impress, but to express my bitter feelings; Not to compel, but to call for an urgent need; most importantly on behalf of all Yaba College of Technology Students, in order to truncate the iniquities of Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe, who happened to be the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos by CHANCE.
Yaba College of Technology has been known for it’s meritable standards, one of which has earned the school more popularity in the country, based on academic excellence. To start from the least, the rate at which objectionable issues are beclouding Yaba College of Technology is quite portentous, an unpleasant scenarios I detested so much. I mean, how should we describe the tenure of a man who is threatening students with their hard earned certificate, torturing students under his watch, depriving them of their rights, at the same time using his position as the Rector of the school to degrade and devalue the school’s standard, probably to devour the school’s fund to his quarters without having second thoughts to query his deeds. Appalling!!!
STUDENT HARRASSMENT
Several cases of maltreatment from the security officers and the OPC in the school had earlier been reported, which the rector find it difficult to proffer an ending solution to. The recent one, if my memory serves me well occurred during the CBT Exam, where Architect Sheriff who happened to be the Dean of Environment stepped beyond his toes, by harassing some female students, slapping and beating them up for abnormal dressing, an accusation which is an obvious lie and unacceptable; the students can all testify to this.
However, recent events had seen Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe harassing the students himself, which give room and privilege for Deans and Lecturers to also do the same. Even students does not possess our expected dignity in front of security officers on campus, they slap and beat students like slaves to their best satisfaction with the sole aim of having directives from the Rector.
My main question as a concerned Nigerian student is simple:
Are we still in Secondary school?
Are we the reason for Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe being the Rector or the Security officers??
DEMOLISHING OF FOOD CAFETERIA
The Rector also proceeds with his devilish act by demolishing the food canteen on Campus. Out of the 4 food canteen within the school premises, two have been demolish on the directives of the Rector. Leaving the students with the food village only, which now made the vendor in the food village to hike the price of their food since students are left with no choice.
Even the two canteen left have been served letters of demolishing starting from the first week of July. And it is said that: A Hungry man is an angry man. Students are now left with no choice than to go outside the campus to source for food that will match their pocket, exposing them to external attack or any hazard that might happen to them off campus.
My main question as a concerned Nigerian student is simple:
Are we not Entitle to food within the Campus during the Military regime of Engr. Omokungbe?
Has he forgotten that food is necessary for students physical and mental developments which aid the student learning ability??
ARREST OF A FREEDOM FIGHTER ON CAMPUS
Badmus Abayomi President School of Business & Management Studies’, popularly known as Mc Virgin was arrested and accused of being a Cultist, alongside Damilare whom the rector reportedly claimed was caught with a gun.
Mc Virgin who is currently studying Business Administration in the school was detained at the Police Custody for over 3weeks with immense torture, after he was accused of been a Cultist. Mc Virgin happened to be one of the few students who have the interest of other students at heart. A student who is loved by everyone, not excluding the Non-academic staffs on campus. Arguably he is one of the few individual who can pull a crowd to make sure the student needs are been considered. A perfect fit for the Student Union PRESIDENT.
However, the clarity of the matter remains the fact that Mc Virgin was arrested on purpose, the day he and other student representative from each department and colleges visited the Rector to launch an appeal in proposition for him to reverse some of the laws he made which is in all ramifications affecting the students, which has been causing lots of depression to some, especially students who has no means to get their school fees paid on time and also students living far away from the Campus.
On that faithful day, after meeting with the rector that later prove unfavourable due to his autocratic response and Nature. He told Mc Virgin to wait behind and called upon the Security Personnel to secretly arrest him keeping other students in the loop, he then laid a negative claim on him of being one of the notorious students who came to shoot inside the college on matriculation day.
The Rector even went as far as colliding with the security personnel to parade him alongside the guy and Gun that was caught on matriculation day, even when Damilare that was caught with the Gun claim Abayomi knows nothing about the incident that occur talk less of being a member of their cult group. This is Injustice and defamation of character on the freedom fighter.
My main question as a concerned Nigerian student is simple:
Why is Mc Virgin arrested on the Day they plan to meet the Rector on school fee hike negotiation?
Can a well known person like Mc Virgin who is a Faculty president be among notorious student to disrupt the school program on Matriculation Day??
RECRUITMENT OF OPC ON OUR CAMPUS
It’s so embarrassing seeing Head of college moving within the Campus with OPC as a security guard. The Rector in an illegal way hired members of the OPC to maltreat students on daily basis, they also go on assignment to hunt students who plan, wish or go against the wish of the rector. Who never can tell if they are on Campus to get all students recruited because there is no authority to check mate their activities on Campus.
The Rector was informed about this issue, but purposely neglected it. He kept on acting like a mayor within the school premises, displaying his nonchalant attitude. It is no news that he had in his possession, an unlicensed gun, kept somewhere in his office.
My main question as a concerned Nigerian student is simple:
Is Yaba College of Technology the Head quarter of O.P.C in Nigeria that gives the Rector privilege to always move around with them on Campus?
Why would a Rector of an institution keep an unlicensed gun in his official office??
INCREMENT IN LATE REGISTRATION AND HOSTEL FEE
At a time when the school management suppose to adhere to student wants and grant weeks upfront for late payment and registration before the deadline, which is the normal protocol higher institutions usually follows for the purpose of allowing students go through ease registration. It’s quite unfortunate that Yaba College of Technology management proceed by adding #5,000 penalty fee for both Part-Time and Full-Time Students, giving lesser time for the students to go through their registration process.
Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe did not stop at that, he proceeded by increasing the hostel fee from #16,000 to #50,000 for the 2018/2019 Academy Session without giving proper notice for this development. The reason he gave for this sudden and unacknowledged act is that the fee was increased due to renovation purposes.
My main question as a concerned Nigerian student is simple:
Should we say that the Anti corruption process implemented by President Muhammed Buhari is not in favour of Engr. Omokungbe?
What is the Tetfund fee usually given for the renovation of schools used for in Yaba College of Technology??
How can a certified Rector be acting so dubiously or ravenously, or should we say he forgot the country current administration detest all means of corruption at all levels. Meanwhile it was the tyrant Rector who is by all means trying not to allow student voice not to be heard, to allow him penetrate deeper with his selfish and greedy acts, without considering the student Welfarism.
It’s not doubt that Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe has been overwhelmed by his pride and he doesn’t wish for student to raise their voice for all these abnormalities engulfing from the school.
I call upon the Bigwigs in the country, from the Presidency to the National Assembly Members (Senate and Reps), the Lagos State Governor, Assembly Members and as well as the Yaba LCDA Executive Chairman and all the Stakeholders and Alumni of this foremost tertiary institution in Nigeria to rescue Yaba College of Technology from these unforeseen destructive plans of the rector, which is gradually taking shape.
Yaba College of Technology must be free from this calamity. The student leadership being the “Student Representative on Council” can’t make any productive move to amend all these raised issues above, because the Rector had threatened them of losing their certificate or withdrawal from the school. The Rector even had this particular student tailed by members of the OPC for any suspicious move; it’s unbearable.
Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe is a leopard who refuse to change his spot. His regime isn’t favoring all the students and staff at all. And there is a need for serious intervention from the Police Forces as well, I will urge them not to be used as devilish tools to front his plans as the consequences will surely boomerang when the perfect time comes.
OUR DEMANDS
•••Thorough adjustment in the security system within the school premises.
•••Provision of convenient and accessible food Cafeteria within the school premises.
•••Immediate lift of ban on Student Union Government (S.U.G) on campus as this anti students policy is subjecting the students voice not to be heard as the voice of the student is the voice of God.
