WE SOLICIT THE SUPPORT OF ALL FULL TIME STUDENTS OF THE COLLEGE IN THIS REGARD, AS INJUSTICE TO ONE IS INJUSTICE TO ALL

WE CALL FOR ALL INCLUSIVE PARTICIPATION OF ALL YABATECH STUDENTS’ IN CONGRESS ACTIVITIESYabatech Students’ Congress hereby declares her open displeasure and dissatisfaction to the proposed one week examination schedule for part time students this semester which is slated to commence from June 25th to July 2nd. This declaration, as we have gathered far and wide across the ranks of part time students is not in the best interest of the affected majority.

A water-tight, slim fitted and jam-packed time table for part time students in these harsh times would only be exposing the mass of students to the mother of all mass failures that has never been recorded since the inception of the part time programme in the College.

Part time programmes of the College are run on evening and week end basis for the working class section of students, many of whom are sponsors of their own selves, and are major role players in their respective businesses and industries. As employees, many of them would are faced with the unpalatable option of resignation and outright dismissal (sack) due to the fact that their exams in school would come up during the week days.

The Congress, has it on good account that some of the candidates who applied for the programme were just recently offered provisional admission. It would only be suicidal for such a newly admitted student to go through the psychological torture of seating for an exam with little or no preparation. These students would still have to grow through the rigours of the admission screening exercise, and pay heavy fees for the session as new entrants.

To further discredit this one week exam cu-de-sac, part time students are being tutored and bred in the poorest of learning conditions across board. The densely populated lecture halls which are often times poorly illuminated as well as the absence of a public address system to ensure effective lecturer-student communication are some of the low points of the realities of learning as a part time student. This is the major resultant effect of the massive withdrawal and poor academic performance of part time students witnessed year in year out.

A large number of part time students, many of which are living below the poverty line, are still struggling to pay the pocket tearing fees for the session. This pecuniary challenge has resulted into deferment of admission and unconditional withdrawal of studentship on a worrisome scale. This disheartening development, we believe would not be justified by conducting an examination which has always been done on weekends for a month in just one week.

We are well aware that the College is more than capable of providing for the welfarism of members of staff that would see to the smooth conduct of the semester exams for a month, as obtainable before now. The guise of wanting to fix the academic calendar and ensure its concurrent running with that of the full time programme does not augur well with the generality of part time students.

In this regard, we call on the College’s centre for continuous studies, the academic planning unit and the academic board to immediately reconsider their position, and reorganize an exam schedule peculiar and suitable for part time programmes as it is being done before now, and as it is being done in other institutions of higher learning. The College’s academic board, should as a matter of exigency consider this position of the Congress as an attempt to reduce the casualty of failures that would rock the College like never before, should the status quo remain unchanged.

We also call on the CITM to address the issues characteristic of the College’s website which has disallowed students from printing their course forms and registering for courses which they are to retake. The course forms which are not yet available, as at press time is an integral component of a student’s file for a semester which would be instrumental to the processing of results. This particular challenge is one of the pointers against the conduct of the exams thirteen days from now.

We arouse the curiosity of every part time student in this manner to immediately launch an operation #NOTOPT1WEEKEXAM campaign as a means of attracting substantial amount of sympathy from highly placed, well meaning members of the public to this struggle.

Full time students are also enjoined to join the outcry and demand that the part time exam be thoughtfully rescheduled for the benefit of all part time students. Full time students should not begin to take reactionary stances to this struggle but rather  an unbreakable bond of solidarity with our part time counterparts should be encouraged as we are confident of emerging victorious in this course. The Congress would at all times continue to serve in the interest of all students, be it part time or full time.

Conclusively, we call for a wider spectrum of participation of all Yabatech students in the Congress. This is necessary to collectively dialogue ideas and stand against policies that are anti-student in intention, perception and scope. The Congress is open to all and sundry. Together we can overcome!

Yabatech students Unite!!!!!!!……. For you have nothing to lose, but your chains
