Yam Price Crashes With New Harvests In Plateau

Prices of yam are now taking a downward trend across yam markets in Plateau State, Daily Trust reports.

At the popular Yan Doya Market in Jos, the prices of all categories of yam have dropped drastically. Our correspondent gathered that the prices are also crashing across other markets in the state.

Alhaji Maigari Lamido, Chairman of the Jos Yam Market, confirmed the development to Daily Trust, saying the sudden reduction in the prices of yam had attracted many buyers to the market to purchase it.

He said, “A N1,000 tuber of yam sold last month is now N400 and a N700 one is now N300. This is the same with other categories. The price is coming down rapidly on a daily basis.

“One of the major factors is that yam farmers from Taraba and Kaduna states and areas like Namu and Bakin Ciyawa within the Plateau have begun to harvest. As a result of that, the yam is now available and affordable in the market.”

The chairman noted that prior to the commencement of the new harvest, yam was very expensive and difficult to get; leading to an increase in the price.

He said there was even a N100 tuber of yam now in the market and that the price would go down even more.

Hamisu Dadi, another yam dealer in Yelwa Town of Shendam LGA, said the price of yam in the area was decreasing by the day as new yam was coming out.
