Yoruba Nation rally: Coroner’s inquest into Salesgirl’s death begins

A Coroner’s inquest into the death of Jumoke Oyeleke, the salesgirl, who was allegedly killed by a stray bullet during the Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos on July 3, began on Monday.

The coroner’s inquest, headed by Chief Magistrate M. K. O. Fadeyi, was held at the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court, Ogba.

Speaking at Monday’s sitting, Fadeyi stated the importance of the inquest, saying justice would be served.

The magistrate, however, urged all the parties involved to file the necessary documents before the court, adding that they should ensure that the written witness statements on oath were filed before the next adjourned date and all parties were served.

The state government was represented by O. E. Akinde, while T. E. Olawanle represented the family of the deceased, and S. A. Adegbeshin represented the police at the coroner’s inquest.

Fadeyi adjourned the matter till August 9 for hearing.

Yoruba Nation agitators had gathered at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota amid the presence of armed policemen and soldiers on July 3.
