The first post-independence leader of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe is dead at the age of 95, at after battling ill health.

The death was announced by his successor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe,” he wrote on Twitter on Friday, using the abbreviation for comrade. “Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten.

Mr Mugabe was removed from power after a military coup in November 2017, which ended his three-decade reign.

Also confirming his death, Zimbabwe’s education secretary, Fadzayi Mahere tweeted: “Rest In Peace, Robert Mugabe.”

Rumors had swirled around the health of the ex-president, who spent months in a hospital in Singapore earlier this year. Details of what ailed him were a closely guarded secret.

Robert Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924, in what was then Rhodesia.

He was imprisoned for more than a decade without trial after criticising the government of Rhodesia in 1964.

Random Comments of his Death (Twitter):

Best thing he ever did! Lol

It’s very disrespectful for Western media especially Daily Mirror to describe Dr Robert Mugabe as ‘notorious former Zimbabwe leader’. He was a Panafricanist who held virtues and plight of Africans dear at his heart. We shall dearly miss him. Rest in power

For the long suffering citizens of Zimbabwe it’s about 40 years too late.

Anyone’s death diminishes me. Admittedly, some rather less than others and in this case I’m thinking around a proton’s worth.

Bravo Mugabe, you’ve finally done something agreeable.

Rest in Peace Robert Mugabe. Africa has lost a PanAfricanist. May your panafricanism spirit dwell forever .
