The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it will carry out the conduct of the forthcoming Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 26, in spite of the recent growing attacks on its facilities in Nigeria’s southeast region.
INEC disclosed this on Monday through its National Commissioner, Adekunle Ogunmola, during the strategic retreat held by the commission in Lagos on Monday to lay the foundation for future elections in the country given the emerging security threats.
While noting that the attacks are a source of concern, the commission pointed out that it is currently engaging key stakeholders in the region to find a lasting solution to security challenges to guarantee the conduct of the forthcoming election in the state.
According to Ogunmola, “For INEC, it won’t be a difficult thing to plan for the Anambra election. We have had similar incidents in the past, for example in Ondo State where some card readers were burnt, we were able to make amends and we conducted that election without any hitch.”
“As for Anambra, I can assure you that we will conduct that election without any problem.”
Several INEC facilities have been targeted and razed by the rampaging unknown gunmen in Nigeria’s southeast.
INEC state and local government offices in Anambra, Enugu, Abia, Enugu, and Ebonyi amongst others have been attacked by gunmen, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty over the conduct of national and state elections in the region.
