Delta State NUT count losses in the Education Sector – – The State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Delta State Chapter, Comrade Tutus Okotie, has counted losses in the education sector arising from the corona virus pandemic , describing it as “huge”.

 

Speaking with newsmen in Asaba, Comrade Tutus Okotie said not only has the unfortunate global pandemic stretched the lean finances of the average teacher, but has also reduced significantly the cognitive retention ability of pupils in the school system owing to the long period stayed at home as well as the dislocation in the school calendar.


He also described effects of the global pandemic as “first of it’s kind in the history of the world.”

 

The Delta NUT helmsman however expressed optimism that the teachers and pupils alike will make up for lost grounds when they resume for academic activities in the State from June 1 2020.

 

Okotie commended the State Governor, lfeanyi Okowa, for the proactive measures put in place to halt the spread of the pandemic in the State, thus reducing cases of those who contacted it to the barest minimum. He therefore appealed to members of the State wing of NUT to continue to adhere strictly to governments preventive measures such as wearing of face mask, washing hands regularly with alcohol based sanitizers, adherence to the safe distancing directives as well as the dusk to Dawn curfew.


In addition, the State NUT Secretary, Comrade Dan Basime, said it has not been easy coping with the effects of the pandemic by his union members and even the pupils and students.

 

Basime describes the COVID-19 as more deadly than even the world wars and holocausts recorded in history, he however expressed optimism that in the not too distant future, academic activities will return to normal.
