Some new markings recently made by Google Map in South-West Australia is making many Curious!

These markings were recently discovered by one user while using the satellite function to scan Australia. He noticed something very odd about one vast expanse of land.

Google Maps is used around the world to help travellers navigate their way to brand new locations but it can also be used to uncover mysterious spots around the globe.

The user shared his findings on Reddit’s “Google Maps Oddities” group to quiz fellow forum users about what the sighting could possibly be – images accompanying the query shows a series of seven screenshots taken from above Australia.

They each show a large patch of land which is brown and desert-like in appearance and amid the sandy terrain, though, are some very odd markings that can be seen even when the camera is zoomed out.

Up close they seem darker, however, when the camera is zoomed back they are lighter in tone.

 

Each marking is a series of squares, all identical in size and position, which are spotted across the land.

 

Some of the places surrounding the area include Plumridge Lakes Nature Reserve, Rawlinna, Madura and Caiguna.

 

The exact spot is also not too far from the ocean.

 

However, according to Reddit users, the exact location of the mysterious markings spans a whopping 200k miles wide.

“About as wide as California”, the user added.

One user suggested: “My best guess is they’re there to prevent wind erosion of the soil.”

“Some bushes and such are planted through the fabric to help hold it down, and fabric is used rather than tarps because moisture reaching the soil, and airflow to anything trying to grow is essential to help prevent that wind erosion.”

“As for the colour, it probably simulates the sky to grass seedlings under it? Once again, pure guesswork.”
