Radio Nigeria Worker, Others Killed by ‘Unknown Gunmen’ In Benue

A Radio Nigeria Worker and other people were killed by ‘Unknown Gunmen’ in Makurdi, Benue Sate on Saturday, 2nd November.

One of the murdered persons was Peter Kumbur, an engineer at Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

Kumbur was an employee of Harvest FM Radio station in Makurdi and head of the engineering services and ICT, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Makurdi.

According to an eyewitness who identified himself as Lever Akpo, Kumbur was relaxing near his house located along School Lane, Low Level area of Makurdi when the gunmen shot him.

He added that the gunmen, after killing the engineer, also killed a neighbour who had rushed out to see what was going on.

“I sat close to Kumbur at a drinking joint and I saw him when he stood up to go home.”

“When he moved towards his house, we heard gunshots. I believe the gunmen laid an ambush for him.”

“They also killed a neighbour who had come out to see what was happening.”

“Kumbur was shot at close range, which resulted to his death immediately.”

“Late Kumbur was a very jovial, brilliant and so accommodating young man who loved everyone,” Akpo said.

Speaking to Punch, a staff and colleague of late Kumbur, Terna Ijua, said he was devastated by the death.

Lamenting the death of the FRCN employee, Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue State, charged the Police and other security agencies in the state to move speedily and apprehend the killers.

Ortom in a statement by his chief press secretary, Terver Akase, described the killing of Kumbur as “barbaric and unacceptable.”

He urged members of the public to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of the killers.

Moreso, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Sewuese Anene, have confirmed the incident saying that the victims were killed on Saturday night.

Anene said the victims who were killed along Amokachi Lane, Low Level Makurdi were already deposited at the mortuary while the Police have commenced full investigation into matter.

The General Manager (GM) of the Radio station, Mr Akange Nyagba, said he was within the vicinity of the crime and took the body of his slain colleague to the mortuary.

“It is true, I was within the vicinity, five meters away where the incident took place. We were playing draft with friends very close to where he sat within his neighborhood but we didn’t know the time he left.”

“About five minutes later, we heard gunshots not more than five yards away from where we were. We rushed and discovered he was shot, we called the Police but they didn’t come 30 minutes after and had no option but to take him to the mortuary.”

“We understand that the gunmen who dressed like SARS were about six in number and were on motorcycles.”

“They actually came for Engineer. After killing him they wanted to go so one of his neighbour wanted to know the identity of any of them but they turned back and killed him too,” he said.

Nyagba further called for full investigation into the matter and prayed God to grant his slain colleague eternal rest.
