The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Alkali Baba Usman, has urged officers of the Delta State Police Command to treat members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB as proscribed organization.
Usman gave the charge while addressing officers of the Command during a one-day working visit on Monday.
He said: “It is expected that whatever affects Anambra State may likely affect, especially Asaba. It is just the bridge that is separating the towns.
“There are always spillovers of agitations and demonstrations from Onitsha to Asaba.
“That is why you need to get prepared to deal with any crime or criminality to ensure that those trouble makers are brought to book.
“You (officers) need to brace up to the IPOB challenge because it is a proscribed organisation and treat them as such.”
Born in 1963, he is an alumnus of Bayero University, Kano, and the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).
Baba holds a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) and a BA(Ed) in Political Science.
The IGP joined the Nigeria Police on the rank of Assistant Superintendent in March 1988. He was elevated to the rank of Commissioner on January 27, 2014.
Baba was at different times AIG Zone-4 Makurdi and Zone-7 Abuja. He was Commissioner of Police Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Delta Commands.
Earlier, he served in FCT as Deputy Commissioner, Investigation; in Kaduna as Deputy Commissioner, Administration; in Ebonyi as Deputy Commissioner, and an Assistant Commissioner, CID in Kaduna.
Baba was the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in various locations Yola, Gombe, Kaduna, and Jos.
The former member of several peace-keeping operations, attended all mandatory courses in the Force. He is trained in investigation, insurgency and counter-terrorism.
Baba Usman is also a fellow of the National Defence College and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
In November 2020, outgoing IGP Mohammed Adamu named him the Acting DIG, Finance and Administration.
Prior to the appointment, the new Police chief was the Force Secretary and the former Director at the Police College.
He is married with children.
