IGBO LEADERS VISIT IGBO LANDING TO FLAG-OFF 2023 IGBO WORLDWIDE FESTIVAL

Former PDP Presidential Aspirant, Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze (Onowu Abagana) and Traditional Ruler of Eri Kingdom Enugwu Aguleri, HM Eze Chukwuemeka Eri (Aka Ji Ovo Igbo), led a visit to Igbo Landing, Atlanta Georgia to officially flag-off the 2023 Igbo Worldwide Festival.

Igbo Landing is a historic site at Dunbar Creek on St. Simons Island, Glynn County, Georgia. In 1803, a group of Igbo people from what is now Nigeria were brought to the island on a slave ship. The Igbo were known for their fierce independence and resistance to slavery, and when they realized that they were to be enslaved in the United States, they rebelled. They took control of the ship and forced the crew to sail back to the open ocean. However, once they were out of sight of land, the Igbo jumped overboard and drowned themselves.

The event of Igbo Landing is significant for a number of reasons. First, it is a powerful story of resistance against slavery. The Igbo chose to die rather than submit to a life of bondage. Second, Igbo Landing is a reminder of the human cost of the transatlantic slave trade. The Igbo were not the only people who died in this way, and their story is just one of many that need to be told. Third, Igbo Landing is a site of cultural memory for the African American community. It is a place where people can come to learn about the history of slavery and resistance, and to reflect on the legacy of this painful chapter in American history.

An oral tradition ever since then happened; the descendants of Africa kept their African cultures alive and on May 2021, this oral tradition was finally recognized as a historical fact, not a myth or story.
