Hilda Baci has been officially named the new record holder for longest individual cooking on Tuesday by Guinness World Records.
“Following a thorough review of all the evidence, Guinness World Records can now confirm that Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes,” the GWR stated in a statement on its website.
The 26-year-old Nigerian chef began on Thursday 11 May and continued through to Monday 15 May, cooking over 100 pots of food during her four-day kitchen stint.
Hilda attempted to set a record of 100 hours, however, almost seven hours were deducted from her final total because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.
The Guinness World Record explained that “As with all ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity. These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Hilda could use the bathroom or sleep during the attempt”.
Chef Hilda Bassey could not hold back her tears after the record was confirmed.
“This is the best news ever omg omg omg thank you so much,” she tweeted.
On her Instagram story, an excited Hilda also broke down in tears, thanking God for the feat.
Hilda’s cook-a-thon generated buzz on social media and attracted interest within and outside Nigeria, a fact corroborated by Guinness World Records.
“Hilda’s cook-a-thon was in fact so popular that our website crashed for two days due to the immense volume of traffic we received from her legion of loyal fans,” a post on the Guinness World Records read.
“Several high-profile Nigerian figures visited Hilda to support her during her record attempt, such as the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; and award-winning singer Tiwa Savage.”
Her feat has triggered a wave of attempts by certain Nigerians to break some records.
Nigerian comedian, Mr Macaroni and others have congratulated Chef Hilda Baci.
She was confirmed to be the new record holder for the longest cooking marathon of 93hrs and 11mins.
Mr Macaroni, reacting to the news via his Twitter page, said, “Congratulations Hilda Baci 🎊🎉
“The greatest lesson here is that Hilda did not stop even after surpassing the 87 hours set by Lata Tondon.
“She went all the way to 100 hours and the decision to do so helped her set a new world record despite GWR taking away 7 hours!!!. I’m inspired to do more. Thank you Hilda.
