Arts and Culture stories of Ibadan and Yorubaland is not complete without the Oloolu masquerade, an iconic figure rooted in the Aje family of Ode Aje.

Chief Oyerinde, head of the Aje family, shares the captivating tale of Ayo̩rinde Aje, a warrior who captured Oloolu during a fierce battle in O̩gbagi, Ondo State.

Once a formidable war masquerade, Oloolu’s unique origin involves Ayo̩rinde’s daring confrontation, leading to the masquerade’s relocation to Ibadan. The name ‘Oloolu,’ meaning ‘you will put your life in peril,’ reflects the risk Ayo̩rinde took in obtaining the captivating Egungun outfit.

“The Oloolu is not just a masquerade; it’s a living legend that embodies our resilience and connection to the supernatural,” says Ade, a local resident.

The mystique deepens as the masquerade is adorned with the head of a woman, a poignant reminder of a gruesome incident. Oloolu’s power extends to a strict code for its bearer—no shoes, no carrying loads on the head, and a 30-day separation from wives before the festival.

In Ibadan’s folklore, Oloolu emerges as a savior during times of crisis, bringing rain and prosperity. “Oloolu is more than a cultural icon; it’s a symbol of hope for our community,” remarks Funke, a market vendor.

The masquerade’s significance is such that challenging it invites dire consequences, as seen when Ipo̩nri-Iku dared to defy Oloolu and faced instant tragedy.

“Oloolu is a force to be reckoned with, a guardian watching over us. We must respect its power,” warns Baba Lekan, an elder in the community.

Oloolu’s influence goes beyond fear, offering blessings to the community—fertility to the barren, prosperity to businesses, and aid to the needy. “During tough times, we turn to Oloolufor strength and guidance,” notes Taiwo, a local farmer.

The custodian of the Oloolumasquerade, the head of the Aje family, holds a position of great responsibility and honor.

As Oloolu dances through the city, its unique attire and rhythmic movements captivate onlookers. The eerie spectacle includes a crown adorned with a woman’s skull, symbolizing the supernatural realm it embodies. The bearer’s rituals intensify the mystique, from a ban on wearing shoes to the prohibition of carrying loads and embracing family.
