The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Anambra State has accused the Governor, Chief Willie Obiano and his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, of interfering in the party’s registration exercise.
The party said Obiano was doing so through some of his aides, adding that Thursday’s interference was the height of it all, as some of the aides sought to take possession of some registration materials meant for particular local government areas of the state.
A press release by the state publicity secretary of APC in Anambra, Mr Okelo Madukife warned Obiano to desist from such interference.
It said, “Our great party frowns vehemently at the attempted wilful disruption of the APC Registration in Orumba North Local Government Area (LGA) by Gov. Willie Obiano, using his Special Assistant of Special Duties and former member of APC, Mr. Emeka Nnebe.
“Obiano’s emissary surrounded APC’s material distribution centre, Awka yesterday and today, seeking to gain forceful possession of materials meant for Orumba North LGA.
“We know it for a fact that our party has not intervened in the lifeless scheme of programs in APGA, let alone introduce thugs to meddle in her dirty kitchen.
“It therefore beats us hollow why someone who by the express provision of our constitution was an APC member until he accepted a political appointment in APGA misgovernance of Anambra State will find the temerity to invade the Centre of materials distribution seeking to hijack materials.”
The party said Obiano’s fears were understandable as APGA members were leaving the party in droves to register with the APC.
Orumba North Local Government Area was on Thursday, February 11, thrown into pandemonium as the party’s membership registration turned violent and bloody.
The APC fingers Senator Andy Ubah’s Senior Aide and loyalist, Mr Chukwudi Kanu for the attack on its Members of Registration and Revalidation Committee for Orumba North Local Government with over 20 thugs.
APC Local Government Youth Leader in Orumba North and Member of Orumba North Supervisory Committee, Mr Ejike Kanu, was seriously beaten and wounded over his refusal to allegwdly hand over the Registration Materials to Senator Andy Ubah’s faction in the Local Government.
‘Violence erupted in Ajalli when Mr Chukwudi Kanu led some thugs into the distribution centre in the presence of the State Caretaker Chairman Chief Basil Ejidike and National Registration Committee Members, who came to know why the materials are yet to get to polling units, attacked Mr Ejike Kanu who has for the past two days refused to be compromised or allow the materials to be diverted. Mr Ejike Kanu insisted as a Member of the Committee, they were under instructions not to allow anybody take control of the Materials. This development did not go down well with Mr Chukwudi Kanu and his co-travellers.’ According to an eyewitness.
The witness added that ‘the State Caretaker Chairman and Members of the National Registration Committee were not left out as the Thugs manhandled them in their bid to stop the thugs from destroying the Materials and attacking Mr Ejike Kanu further.
As at the time of this report, Mr Ejike Kanu has been rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he is receiving medical attention.
More report have it that Registration Material for Oyi Local Government is still with the Registration committee because of fear of violence and attack, while that of Ogbaru Local Government is still at the Atani Police Station and has not been distributed at this time.
Onitsha North is yet to receive their materials as some thugs allegedly loyal to Mr William azuka and Mr Agha have sworn to disrupt the exercise if the materials are not handed over to them. The Leader of the Committee, ‘Mr Tallest’ was seriously molested by these thugs on Wednesday night and out of fear, he abandoned the materials and has refused to come back for it.’
